Ukrainian-American Youth Bring New Life to Museum

Spring 2017 is an exciting time for the Ukrainian Lemko Museum – located within the Ukrainian Museum and Library in Stamford, Connecticut at St. Basil Seminary. As new life emerges in Nature with beautiful flora and wildlife, a resurrected spirit of cultural pride and beauty materializes within our Museum.

During this renewal, the Ukrainian Lemko Museum directs its education and exposure towards Ukrainian youth. The Museum works with the Organization for the Defense of Lemkivshchyna (OOL) and the Ukrainian-American Youth Association (UAYA, also know as CYM) to help inform young people about Lemko life, art, and history.

On March 18, the Stamford, CT branch of CYM led by Tania Sawa-Priatka visited the Museum for a Director’s Tour. The group viewed original Lemko folk-crafts – including miniatures, woodworking, pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs), painting, and folk-dress. As well, the tragic topic of Akcja “Wisla” – the 1947 forced resettlement of the Ukrainian minority in Poland – was discussed by members of the youth organization, and is illustrated by several Museum artworks.

A visit to the Museum is a unique educational experience – one that both CYM and I appreciate. I am inspired to open the Museum’s door to even more young people, in an effort to share knowledge of traditional Lemko culture and life.
