Lemkos (лемки; lemky)

A Ukrainian ethnic group which until 1946 lived in the most western part of Ukraine on both sides of the Carpathian Mountainsand along the Polish-Slovak border (see Lemko region). The name seems to be derived from the frequent use of the word lem ‘only’ by the Lemkos. They usually call themselves rusnaky or rusyny(Ruthenians). During all his life in US Yuriy Kowalczyk was very active in the Organization for the Defense of Lemkivshchyna (OOL) and held many positions, including the National Director for Welfare Projects, where he collected thousands of dollars for charitable projects and earned legendary status for his efforts.
